Statement of intent - Nihaal Singh
For my shoots I am going to focus on the theme of textures. I am going to do this by going around the school and taking photos of different things with manmade or natural textures. I will not be able to take many landscape photos because of safety as there is a pandemic. I will carry out research such as how to use different aspects of a camera and different lenses such as a micro lens. I will learn to edit my photos so that my photos can shine and get me a better grade. In the project I would like to do photoshoots of different textures, I could do this by taking photos of natural textures such as plants and trees and for manmade textures I could take photos of pipes and benches. I would like to do a shoot of fruit and veg, I would like to do this because I think that they would be very interesting and good to take photos of.
In my shoots I would like to try and work in the style of Lucy Shires. I would like to do this because she also takes photos of manmade textures and she makes them look very interesting. She does this by using different compositional techniques which I would also like to use to make my photos look more compelling like Lucy Shires does with her photos. I would also like to work in the style of Imogen Cunningham as he takes photos in black and white. This looks very engaging as it leaves a sense of mystery when looking at the photo.
I will create a gallery for Lucy Shires to show her different photos and give me an idea of how I would like my photos to look like. I would also like to make a gallery for Imogen Cunningham so that I can understand how I could take photos working in the style of him. when taking my photos, I would use different techniques such as compositional rules, this includes things such as birds eye view/ symmetry/ leading lines. These would help my photos look a lot better and more appealing. When working in the style of Imogen Cunningham, I would use photoshop to make photos black and white. I could also use it for Lucy Shires to make the colors of my photos a bluish tone as Lucy Shires did.
Through the project I would like to have a range of photos and a better understanding of how to take better photos and use a camera. I would also like to learn to edit my photos which will help my photos stand out. At the end of the project I would like to have a website fully finished with analyzing Photos and with lots of photos from myself. I would like to also have a great understanding of how to fully take good photos and different styles of photograph

Analysis 1
The photographer has taken a picture of a still life of wasps eating an apple. This is a really realistic picture as it is natural that the wasps are spread around and not looking straight at the camera and this would of taken a long time. This is because for each wasp on an apple to finally stay still would have been a long time, this implies that it would have needed a lot of patience. The background is also out of focus which means that the aperture would be quite low in the picture and the F stop would be around F4.6. He does this because he wants us to focus on the wasps and apples and think at what they are doing. The photographer uses a green background for the red apples. This is because on the colour wheel, red and green are complementary colours which makes the colours stand out together and there is also a slight hint of yellow in the background that balances the yellow on the wasps. The title is in French and is "C’est Pas Du Luxe" but translated it means "to have so much that it is wasted." This makes the impression that the photographer thinks that we have so much food that we waste it and he is trying to indicate us to try and stop. The photo must of taken a long time to get right which means that the photographer might of used a tripod to keep the camera steady. The shutter speed was most likely fast as the photo needed to be taken quickly when the wasps were still. The table that Roe Etheridge uses leaves a line of symmetry in the photo as it crosses right through the middle of the image.
This photo was made by Roe Ethridge and I believe the picture was taken in 2012 to put in his book with many other great photos of his, the book is called Le Luxe with all his photos from the last 10 years. https://photobookstore.co.uk/products/le-luxe. He is 52 years old and born on August 8 1969. He went to Florida State University and Accent training association in Florida to learn to take high quality photos.
In my opinion, this is a really good photo and he takes it in a really clever way. He does this by making us focus on the apples and what the wasps are doing. He also names it really well as it changes our viewpoint on the photo and makes us think about the food we waste. The scale of the apples are a lot bigger than the wasps. This implies that the wasps will not be able to finish it all and it is just going to go to waste. Roe Ethridge must have had amazing imagination to take a photo like this s it has got a great background and theme that goes together really well. He also made the background bury which also shows his skills as a photographer and makes the photo look more appealing. I think I could attempt to take a photo like this in the future and make it look very appealing. I could try to take a photo like this by using fruit to attract flies, bees or wasps like Roe Etheredge did. This would require a lot of time and skill so that the insects are able to get in an affective position.
Analysis 2
This photo was taken in 1982 and was taken by Harold Feinstein on a beach and is called Venus Comb Murex. The photo was made to go into his book called 100 seashells. He also worked at a university called University of Pennsylvania and private workshops in his studio. Harold Feinstein was born 17 April 1939 in Coney Island in New York and was 84 years old when he died on 20 June 2015. Harold Feinstein now has major exhibitions on the Whitney Museum of American art.
The photo shows a shell that is reflecting off the sunset in the background. This photo is a photo also has juxtaposition with the orange of the sunset and the shell with the blue sky. The title doesn’t really make a change of what we think of the photo as he is just stating what the photo is. The photo is really realistic as it has natural light and background to create the photo. The theme of the work is to show different shells so people can see the beauty of them. I think that he has used a narrow depth of field as the background is a bit blurred compared to the front of the picture. I also think that he has used symmetry I think this because the shell branches are the same both sides. The lines coming of the shell makes a cool paten with the background which makes it stand out. All the space has also been used which takes up all the space which makes the viewer feel trapped as it is curving all around them, however the photo also looks as if the she is a guard or shield protecting them from the scorching sun. Our eyes are led to the background as all the shell is covered with shadows but a spot of light by the sunset in the background catches your eye immediately. This is a foreground picture as the shell is really close to the camera and is like a close up image.
Overall I think that this picture is really good and the lighting and background is amazing. It must have taken a lot of skill to take this photo as it looks very affective with the background and the leading lines. It also must have taken a long time to get a background like this so he might of used a tripod to keep the camera steady while the time was right to take the photo. I could try to take a photo like this by using an interesting seashell and getting the background on a iPad or tablet and using something as a shade to get the shady affect. However if I try this with a real background, it will be a cool photo to try out however it will require a lot of time but will be worth it when the photo is finished.

Lucy Shires
For future shoots I could take pictures of man made texture in the style of Lucy Shires For this shoot I could do them indoor and outdoor with different types of textures I find. If I was to do a shoot inside, I would use a higher ISO than what I would use when doing an outdoor shoot. This is because I would have less light coming in my photos so I would use a ISO around 900. However if I was outdoors I could use a ISO of around 500 as I would have more natural light coming in. For the shoots I would use close up types of shoots so that I will be able to see the texture from close up. I would use different types of materials and patterns when taking my photos and different leading lines. I use different materials to get different textures like brick would have a rough texture and metal would have a smooth texture. The patterns of things could also change the texture of things as if an object has a bumpy pattern. Leading lines will make the photo more exciting such as railings will get people thinking where they lead to.
Imogen Cunningham
For shoots in the future, I could take pictures of black and white flowers like in the style of Imogen Cunningham. For this shoot I could take them indoor or outdoor with different plants I find. If i do a shoot inside I would use an ISO of around 800 however, if i was outside I would use an ISO of around 500 which is less than the indoor shoot because you get a lot more sunlight outside. For this shoot I could use many types of ways of taking them such as: birds eye view, worms eye view, or even just a normal view. For the shoot, I would use different types of patterns on the flowers or different shape flowers that look unique. By doing this the photos would look a lot more interesting to the viewers as it could get them thinking about what the patterns are or what they mean.

Fruit and Vegetable and Texture
Description of aims for shoot:
For this shoot, I would use different types of fruit and vegetables to take photos of. I will use different types of compositions such as close ups such as Harold Feinstein, symmetry or rule of thirds to help make my photos better. At the end of the shoot I hope to have a group of photos that will show lots of photos using different composition techniques and camera settings.

I will work in the style of Andy Small by taking photos of brightly colored fruit and vegetables. I will do this by slicing fruit and arranging them to take my photos.
Location:
Props/ items needed:
Kit needed e.g. lighting, tripod, backdrop, macro lens:
A studio
Mushrooms/orange/
grapefruit/tomato/
cabbage.
Light box/ Lamp/spot light/blue tack/backdrop
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop :This is a camera setting that changes how wide the camera lens opens. The lower the F stop the more out of focus the photo is. A low F stop would be the most suitable for this shoot as there would be a blur in the background as I will not be taking far ranged photos.
White Balance: This is when you change the shade on a digital camera to change the mood of the photo.
Shutter speed: Shutter speed is how fast or slow the camera lens closes to take the photo. The smaller the shutter speed the easier it is to take a photo without blur. For this shoot I will use a low shutter speed around 1/30 to allow a less motion blur.
ISO: This is how bright or grainy a photo is. The higher the Iso the grainier the photo is and the lower the ISO the more darker the photo is.
Which compositional rules will I use?
I will use a variety of compositional rules to make my photos look more interesting. In my photos I will use close ups to make my photo look more fascinating and make it look like a pattern. By doing this I would be going in the style of Lucy Shires
Lucy shires doesn't photograph fruits or veg! Check your link with the photographer. by getting the textures of the fruit and vegetables. I would also use the use of triangles to give my photos more arrangement.

This picture is out of focus which shows I used a low aperture around 2.7 and there isn't a lot of light in the photo which I shows I used a low ISO around 100 as well. If I was to change how I took the photo I would make the aperture and ISO higher. Making the aperture higher it would be more clear and focused. By upping the ISO it would of made my photo lighter.
|
This is my best image because the photo is really clear and I done this by making my aperture around f6. The light is perfect and looks really good with the photo I took and I done this with the. I have used a close up which means that you can really get the texture if the mushroom. Also there are leading lines which makes the photo look better. I have used the white balance of tungsten light as I took the photo inside and this white balance will look make it look clear.

Lightbox
Worst Photo
|
Best Photo |
This is my worst picture because the lighting is really low and the ISO is also low around the number of 200. The photo doesn’t look very appealing . I could have also changed the white balance to incandescent so that it will lighten up the photo. Changing the shutter speed to a slower one will make it lighter as it will allow more light to enter the lens.
|
This would be my best image because the lighting is not to dark and not too light, this makes the fruit really stand out. The bright orange underneath makes the fruit stand out as they both hit you straight away. The image used a white balance of florescence light as the lightbox underneath is letting off a bright light making the fruit stand out.
|
Cabbage
Worst PhotoI think that this is my worst image because it is a bit out of focus and doesn't look very appealing towards my other photos. I think i would of used a low aperture as the photo is out of focus.
|
Best PhotoI think that this is my best photo because the image is in focus and clear. The lines also lead peoples eyes down the piece of cabbage. The water marks makes the cabbage standout with the light reflecting on it.
|
Tomato
Worst PhotoThis is my worst photo because the positioning of the camera makes it look less affective as it is too close. The photo is also out of focus which I could have changed. The ISO makes the photo too grainy which I should have made less as the photo looks too over exposured. To make the photo look less bright, I could have used a slower shutter speed so that less light is able to get into the lens.
|
Best PhotoThis is my best photo because it is really clear and the lighting is also very good. I have put the ISO setting around 500 to make the tomatoes not look too grainy or too dark. The foreground is out of focus which then shifts into focus in the midground then out of focus in the background again. This makes the photo look very affective as it uses skill to use the F-stop in this way. For the white balance, I have used the florescence light setting so that the photo is not under or over exposured.

Indoor Shoot
WorstI think that this is my worst photo because it is really dark. This shows that I have used a low ISO around 200. It is also out of focus, this shows that I have used a low F stop around f1. For this shoot I should of used a higher ISO around 500 to make the photo brighter. I should of also used a higher F stop around F4 so that the photo would of been more in focus. I could have also gotten closer to the object so that I could get more of the texture and the leading lines in my photo.
|
BestIn my opinion this is my best photo. This is because the photo is clear which shows I have used a F stop of F5. The brightness is really good. I think this because it the ISO is high enough to capture the object but not light up the background as much. I have used a white balance of shade as the photo is quite dark. I have made the background out of focus which means that I have used an aperture of around 4 Overall I think that this is a good photo that looks very affective.

This is my worst photo because it is out of focus which means I used a low F stop around F1. I framed it as a close up photo which looks quite appealing however I used a low F stop. To make this photo better I would make my Camera f stop setting higher so it is not out of focus and more appealing.
|
I think that this is my best photo because it is really clear and light which makes it more appealing. To do this I used a F stop around 2.8 which makes it go in focus. For this photo I would of used a low ISO because I had a lot of sunlight which means I would of used an ISO of 200. This photo has the compositional rule of leading lines which leads the eye to follow the lines.
|
Natural Textures
WorstThis is my worst photo as the ISO is too high which is about 800. This will make the photo too grainy. The white balance is at shade as the photo is bright and unclear to see. The photo is also out of focus which means that it is at a low F-stop. The photo has not positioned properly as it does not look very appealing. I have used a too much of a slow shutter speed as there is too much light in the lens which makes the photo too bright and it does not look very good.
|
BestThis is my best photo because it is in focus and is not too dark or light. This photo is taken outside and I used the white balance shade. I used a close up so that I can get the texture of the leaves and plant. I used a ISO of 300 so that the photo is not too grainy. The leaves and plant are shining in the sun light which makes it a lot more alluring. To make the photo have this sunlight in I have used a shutter speed of around 1/15 which allowed more light to get in the lens of the camera.
|
Manmade textures
WorstThis is my worst photo because it does not look very attractive and because it is very simple and does not show a lot of skills. To make this photo look better, I should of used more compositional rules or made it more interesting by changing the view of the photo or doing more of a close up so that I could get a greater view of the rust on the bar.
|
BestI think that this is my best photo because it I have used birds eye view to show more skill in my photo. It also looks interesting with the light shining down on the fence which makes it more alluring with the contrast of light and dark. I have used a ISO around 400 so the photo is not to grainy and a white balance of sunlight so the photo is clear. I have used a fast shutter speed as there was a lot of sunlight so I needed less light in the lens.

This is my best photo because it shows professionalism with the low F-stop which makes the background out of focus. The picture also looks interesting with the close up of the chains linking onto each other. I have also used the compositional rules of leading lines and birds eye view to make the photo look intriguing. The day was cloudy so I used a cloudy white balance and I have used an ISO of around 400. The photo is in focus which makes the photo look even more appealing.
|
This is my worst image because it doesn't show much skill and doesn't look very alluring. This image also does not use any compositional rules which might not catch no ones attention. I have made the camera too close to the object which makes it look boring and dull.

Close up
For this photo, I have use a micro lens to get a close up of a flower. I have used a low f stop as I was very close to the object. The F stop I have used is around F2. For the white white balance I kept it on auto as I was unsure which one was best for a close up. I used an ISO of around 400 as I was very close up meaning it didn't need a high ISO. I used a mid shutter speed because I didn't use a lot of natural light so I used a shutter speed of around 1/60.
|
This is my worst photo because it isn't very clear and you can't tell what it is. I have used an F - stop of around 3 however I never focused the lens meaning it was out of focus. If I was changing this photo, I will

Evaluation |
In this project, I looked at the theme of texture and all the different types of photos you could take with this theme. At first was unsure what this course would be like as I was new to photography and I didn't think I would like it. However, later in the project, I got more confident and I felt that the course was a lot more interesting than I thought. At first I didn't know that there were so many things I could take photos on, however now I understand that anything could be used to make a good photograph. Before I got into the course I was not very open minded about the photos I could take and it made my progression quite slow. If I could change something about this course, it would be my attitude as I believe with a better attitude I could have gotten a lot further than I actually got. In the project I looked at a few photographers such as Lucy Shires who took close ups of manmade textures and Imogen Cunningham who took black and white photos of flowers. By looking at these photographers it gave me inspiration to take photos like theirs and taught me a lot about what I could do when taking my photo. I liked Lucy shires shoots especially because I found the was she did her close ups were intriguing. The kind of compositional rules I used in my photos is close ups, rule of thirds, texture, birds eye view and worms eye view and angles. By doing this, it made my photos look more professional as it makes it look a lot better
